Company and Shashi Overview 		越中国出身の初代清水喜助(しみず・きすけ、1783-1859)は1804年(文化元)江戸神田鍛冶町で大工を開業、清水屋と号す。清水屋は幕末明治期に築地ホテル館、三井組ハウスなど洋風建物を建築、渋沢栄一邸も手掛け栄一の信頼を得る。1887年(明治20)には栄一を相談役に迎え、日清日露戦争期を経て業容を拡大、1915年(大正4)合資会社清水組に改組。技術向上と経営合理化に努め、1937年(昭和12)株式会社となる。第二次大戦後1948年(昭和23)清水建設(株)と改称し、復興工事に邁進する。創業150年記念に刊行された本書は、歴史学者丸山二郎(1899-1972)に委嘱した「清水建設株式会社社史原本」を基に編纂されたもので、時代ごとの5篇と附録からなる。本文中に錦絵・図面・写真を多数使用し、各時代の施工写真とその他の主な施工リストを入れた「竣工写真集成」が本文と別のページ立てで挟み込まれている。巻頭の総目次のほか、各篇冒頭に詳細目次を置く。第1篇「江戸時代」には、初代清水喜助の足跡と幕末にかけての事業展開を記載。第2篇「明治時代」では維新後の時代における新たな事業の広がりと共に、渋沢栄一との関わりも詳しく触れている。第3-5篇はその後の躍進と戦後の展開について記載。第6篇附録には年表や各種資料がまとめられ、事項索引付。
Originally from Etchu, Shimizu Kisuke I (1783-1859) opened a carpentry shop called Shimizu-ya in Edo in 1804. The company was reorganized into a limited partnership company and renamed the Shimizu Gumi in 1915, became the Shimizu Gumi, Ltd. in 1937, and then Shimizu Construction Co., Ltd in 1948. The 150-year history uses plenty of illustrations and photographs to trace the company’s history from its founding until 1953. Shibusawa Eiichi (1840-1931) appears often in the shashi as a consultant to Shimizu Gumi. There are also many mentions of the Shibusawa family home, Dai-Ichi Kokuritsu Ginko (First National Bank), and the buildings of other companies related to Shibusawa Eiichi that were built by Shimizu.
